FAQ

What exactly is Safebox?
Safebox is a self-hosted software platform that lets you install and run powerful open-source applications — like file storage, media streaming, smart home control, and more — directly on your own device. It's designed to give you full control over your digital environment without relying on cloud services.
How is Safebox different from platforms like Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud?
Unlike traditional cloud services, Safebox doesn't rely on external servers. Your data stays on your own machine, with no tracking, no subscription traps, and no vendor lock-in. You control what’s installed, where your data lives, and who has access. no tracking, no subscription traps, and no vendor lock-in. You control what’s installed, where your data lives, and who has access.
What is Geo-redundant backup and why it is useful?
Your data is securely backed up to devices in different physical locations, not just on your local network. You can set up encrypted backups to other trusted Safebox instances, even in separate cities or countries. This protects your data against local failures or hardware damage, ensuring you can recover it from anywhere, anytime.
What is the difference between the Basic and the Pro plan?
The Basic (free) plan includes local access, a full suite of applications, and encrypted backups to local devices. The Pro (€10/month) plan provides remote access via custom domains, geo-redundant backups across locations, and unlimited subdomain support.
Where is my data stored by Safebox?
Your data is stored only on your devices — either on the main Safebox host or on additional backup endpoints you configure. Nothing is sent to external servers unless you explicitly set it up (e.g., via remote backup to another trusted device).
Is Safebox really open source and free to use?
Yes. The Safebox framework and installer are fully open-source and free for personal or professional use. You can inspect the code, contribute to development, or adapt it to your own needs. The Pro plan offers additional convenience features, but it's optional.
Can I access my apps and files from anywhere? What is remote access?
Yes — with Safebox Pro, you gain full remote access. This feature allows you to connect your installed apps to a custom domain (your own or one registered through us), so you can securely log in from any browser, anywhere in the world.
How are backups handled, and are they secure?
Safebox includes built-in encrypted backup functionality. In the free version, backups are done over your local network to other devices you own. With Pro, you can securely back up to remote locations using geo-redundant encrypted channels.
